how to prevent them for biting

Hi,

As I have ordered the flight suits, I'm excited with the idea of taking them outside,  I'm starting to catch them with my hand to make my lovebirds used to this fact in order to put the flight suit later.

However, they don't stop biting with all their strengths causing a lot of pain and blood.

I tell them off for biting, by they don't care.

I'm thinking about it is going to be a real challenge to put them in their flight suits.

If you have any tip please advice.

I've been thinking to wear gloves.

When they bite you should tell them "No" and return them to their cage for a few minutes.You should also try feeding them while they are in your hand also did you order the leash along with the flight suit?

Thanks for your reply! I ordered x2 avian fashion printed flight suit. I think is included?

I'll try with the food . they bite with the power of a shark.

Good articles. I read that it is possible to wear a glove however they are so frightened of a glove as they panic. I'll think about it

The leash is sold separately but there is a pack that comes with the leash I don't know if you got that one.

Hi Pablo. I think Brandon is the best bet when it comes to harness training, I just want to jump in here and say something about parrot training in general that I hope will be useful to you. 

I've found that the best way to get a parrot to do what I want isn't to make him do it and hope he gets used to it. You can force them, but in the end you damage the bond you have, or hope to have. The best way to train is to find a way to make it something that he wants to do. Parrots respond really well to positive reinforcement.

I wouldn't even start on the harness with your lovebirds until they get a lot more comfortable being handled. Getting bit hard enough to draw blood is a clear message that you're pushing too hard. Because you are not responding to them when they give you subtler cues, they're biting. You're actually teaching them that they must bite in order to communicate with you. I would approach the handling like any other training process. Break it down into tiny steps and reward, reward, reward. You need to build a lot of trust before thinking about the harness, and positive training is a good way to do that. I would not use a glove. Many, many parrots don't like them.

Rather than setting out to put the harness on the bird, break the process down into small steps. Start at the beginning and reward for the slightest bit of progress. Don't work on it for more that five or ten minutes at a time, but you can have many training sessions in a day.

Thanks for the answer. I agree with you. The glove makes them terrified that's why I don't use it and even if the female step up in the finger he hates to be catched.

I have to invest a lot of time with rewards however catching is not like putting the finger in front of her and wait until she steps up. I don't know which intermediate stages could exist for this...

If you're willing to start from the beginning, and be very patient, there are things you can try that may ultimately make them willing to step up. Then you wouldn't have to catch them. Here are a couple of discussions you might be interested in. I adopted a 21 year old cage bound Quaker. Putting a perch on the outside of his cage where he could easily get to it was a good first step for him.
